Green triangle What to do if you are thinking of separating from your partner .

1. Take legal advice before you do anything else.

2. Make sure before you decide to take legal advice that you have considered marriage guidance counselling.

Relationships Australia offers counselling. Their website can be found at http://www.relationships.com.au.

There are also many books available that may assist you.

Green triangle Your first appointment with a Family Lawyer.

An experienced family lawyer will give you information and general advice at your first appointment.

With that assistance, you may be able to work things out with your partner without needing to retain a lawyer for your case.

At your first appointment with us, we will be establishing whether you only need advice or whether your situation is complex enough to require that you instruct us to act as your solicitors over a period of time.

Green triangle Ways to cut costs and help your lawyer.

Lawyers usually charge on an hourly rate. Every time you make contact, or your lawyer works on your file, costs will be incurred.

The lawyer needs your full story and you can help keep costs down by getting important documents together and writing down important dates.

Green triangle Using the Internet for your Family Law case.

There are a number of sites on our Links Page including the Family Court of Australia, Legal Aid and Relationships Australia.

After you have had advice, you may use these to conduct your own case, or to assist you in instructing your solicitor.

We welcome email communications from clients. Emails are treated for charging purposes like the old-fashioned letter.
